Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight met with Sarasota County Commissioners Tuesday to talk about overcrowding at the county jail.
Knight says while the number of arrests are dropping, people being initially charged are being forced to stay in jail because of judges setting increasingly high bonds, even for nonviolent crimes.
Both Knight and the board said another solution needs to be found outside of building another jail…he said since many are there for what he called a quality of life crime, he is pushing for rehab rather than incarceration.
