When Sarasota opened up its noise ordinance for public discussion, residents brought a surprise to the podium: the city’s loudest neighbor isn’t a bar or a motorcycle. It’s Sarasota High School. Neighbors say amplified sound from the school tops every other complaint, from mufflers to late-night music.
One resident argued that the school’s exemption from the noise ordinance was written when sound technology was completely different. Modern PA systems can project across a stadium and well into surrounding blocks. Residents say schools should be held to community standards just like everyone else. Meanwhile, the Sarasota Police Department, code enforcement, and sound researchers are working on enforcement strategies, and they want to collect more data during peak tourist season before changing anything.
The broader city sound study could end up reshaping noise rules for all of Sarasota. That makes this more than a school issue. It’s about whether old exemptions still make sense when the equipment has changed, and whether year-round residents have to wait for tourist season data before anything happens.
