Sarasota County Storm Response Update On Hurricane Debby

Resource Center Opens Today
FEMA representatives will be available at the Sarasota Resource Center, located at 2923 Ashton Road, starting at 1 p.m. today, Monday, Aug. 19. The center will be open from 1 – 7 p.m. today. Beginning Tuesday, Aug. 20, the center’s hours will extend from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 1 – 5 p.m. on Sundays. The center offers basic supplies, and walk-ins are welcome.

Public Works Crew in Action
This morning, Sarasota County Public Works crews, led by Director Spencer Anderson, are working near Lorraine Road and Palmer Blvd. They are constructing a berm to help drain water and allow for an accurate inspection of the area’s drainage pipes. The inspection aims to identify any contributing factors to flooding beyond the historic rainfall experienced during the recent storm.

FEMA and SBA Assistance Available
Residents and business owners impacted by the storm can begin applying for FEMA assistance online at DisasterAssistance.gov, by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362), or through the FEMA App. Additionally, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has opened a Business Recovery Center at the Resource Center, offering support for disaster-related losses. Walk-ins are accepted, or appointments can be scheduled. The deadline for physical property damage applications is Oct. 9, 2024, with the deadline for economic injury applications on May 12, 2025.

Debris Cleanup and Damage Assessment
As of Aug. 18, Sarasota County has collected approximately 8,300 cubic yards of storm debris. The estimated damage assessment as of Aug. 19 stands at $47.3 million.

Comfort Stations Open
Two comfort stations providing laundry, hot showers, and restrooms are open 24 hours a day for those affected by the storm. The stations are located at:

  • 3340 Bahia Vista St.
  • 8200 Bee Ridge Road
