Sarasota County deputies wrapped up their first week of school zone enforcement with 238 citations and 296 warnings handed out across 24 school zones. The effort, which ran through Friday, August 15, targeted drivers speeding or violating traffic laws in areas where students are present. The Sheriff’s Office noted that most drivers showed increased caution as students returned to class, but the sheer number of stops shows the crackdown is real.
For local drivers, the stakes are higher than a standard ticket. The speed limit in marked school zones is 15 miles per hour when lights are flashing, and fines are doubled. A simple moment of distraction can lead to a costly citation that hits the wallet twice as hard as a regular speeding ticket. Deputies are reminding everyone to watch for pedestrians, crossing guards, and the unpredictable nature of kids heading to and from school.
As the school year continues, enforcement will remain active. If you drive through a school zone in Sarasota County, now is the time to build better habits. Slow down, put the phone away, and give yourself extra time for drop-off and pickup. It saves money and, more importantly, it protects the youngest members of our community.
