Sarasota County has a budget problem to the tune nearly $5.5 million. The commission is looking at major cuts rather than dive into some sort of rainy day account. An eye-opener for the public is the $1.7 million in cuts to the public library system, and that’s if the deficit doesn’t increase. A whopping $14 million has already been discussed being cut this year in various departments. A rundown of the potential are as follows, but not limited to $2.3 million from the Parks and Recreation Department, Public transportation will be slashed by $2.1 million and Health and Human Services would see a drop in its budget by $1.3 million. If the parks budget is cut that would affect North Port, Venice and Sarasota since the county currently does work for each of those cities.
