The Sarasota County School Board took the first official steps toward establishing their own police department Tuesday night.

The board, by a 3-2 vote, approved a variety of new job descriptions including two key leadership positions for the district’s new police department: the chief of police and police sergeant.

The police chief will have at least 10 years of experience in law enforcement and five years in law enforcement administration. The estimated salary for that position is about $124,000.
