Joe Gruters said on Monday that he is stepping down as chairman of the Republican Party of Sarasota County after a 10-year reign.

Gruters recently won a state Senate seat, and said he wants to devote more time to his new role as well as his family.

Gruters’ tenure hasn’t been without controversy, notably a $20,000 fine the party paid to the Florida Ethics Commission in 2016. Some within the party accused Gruters- a CPA- of mismanaging the books at the time.

He also pushed for an endorsement and loyalty policy last year and got some pushback from Republicans when he voted to expel a member of the executive committee who was linked to racist and far-right groups.
