Sarasota County commissioners say they are looking into redrawing commission district boundaries this year.

They claim it’s needed to “balance districts that have unequal populations.” Critics, though, call it a scheme to protect those already in office and the Republican control of county government.

The change comes just five months after voters approved changing how county commissioners are elected. Instead of voting for countywide seats, voters would be limited to voting for those candidates within their districts.
