The police chief in Punta Gorda has taken personal responsibility for a woman’s death at the hands of one of his officers.

Thomas Lewis says he “takes full responsibility for the actions of” his department and his officers.”

He calls himself “100 percent accountable.”

Lewis also says the department would not provide further comment on the death of Mary Knowlton until the FDLE finishes its investigation.

Officer Lee Coel shot the 73-year-old Knowlton on Tuesday during a training exercise at a citizens police academy.

Coel remains on administrative leave from the department.
