A Saturday morning crash near Punta Gorda sent one man to the hospital. Police say 47-year old Billy Gilcrest of Arcadia fell asleep at the wheel of his Toyota Camry around 9:30 Saturday morning when he crashed into a tree. A report from the Florida Highway Patrol says Gilcrest was driving northbound on State Road 31 when he fell asleep, causing him to drive into the southbound lane, then through a grassy shoulder, before finally hitting a tree. He was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital and was cited for careless driving.
