A Charlotte County judge has sentenced Scott Daniel Johnson to 25 years in prison after he was adjudicated guilty of lewd and lascivious molestation of a child under 12. The abuse took place in May while Johnson was babysitting the victim in Punta Gorda. Following his prison term, Johnson will serve lifetime sex offender probation, meaning he remains under court supervision and on the state registry for the rest of his life.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant State Attorney Dennis Wallace II of the Special Victims Unit, the division of the State Attorney’s Office that handles crimes against children and other vulnerable victims. The conviction and sentence close a case that began with an act of betrayal inside a home where a child should have been safe.
For families across the Suncoast, this case raises hard but necessary questions about who we allow into our homes to care for our kids. Background checks, references, and simple gut instinct all matter more than most of us like to admit. How do you decide who’s trustworthy enough to watch your children?
