When Hurricane Michael made landfall in October in the Panhandle, it crippled a key portion of the state’s prison system, leaving nearly 1,000 prison employees displaced from the area and more than 5,000 inmates moved to facilities across Florida. The numbers show a growing problem in a region where a sizable part of the workforce is employed by the corrections system.
