A Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, mother is facing third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment charges after her four-year-old daughter died late last year from pseudomembranous colitis, a severe bacterial colon infection. The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide caused by neglect. Sarah Brubaker, 36, is being held at the Clearfield County Jail on $1 million bail.
According to police, Brubaker told investigators her daughter had not eaten in at least two weeks before she was found unresponsive and cold to the touch. The child had been suffering from severe diarrhea, balance problems and worsening weakness. A search of the home turned up two working refrigerators with no food inside, along with a heating system that functioned but had been intentionally shut off, leaving ice forming on the interior windows despite a free natural gas well on the property.
