The Peace River rose to 15 feet this week and pushed into Arcadia’s River Acres neighborhood, flooding about 20 homes and submerging some cars. Residents told WINK News the water came up faster than they anticipated, forcing them to move vehicles to higher ground and pack go-bags in a hurry. Saleh Webber summed it up simply: it was faster than he thought it would be.
Through it all, neighbors looked out for each other, delivering water and supplies to households hit hardest. That kind of block-by-block support is what carries a community through the days after the water recedes.
If you or someone you know needs help, Arcadia-DeSoto County Habitat for Humanity is sharing relief supplies at 318 North Wilson Avenue, Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. River levels can change quickly this season, so stay alert and check on the people around you. Have you checked in on a neighbor in Arcadia this week?
