Palmetto city commissioners recently discussed a proposed 365-day moratorium on new retail smoke shops. The city currently has three, and the pause would give staff time to review how the businesses are regulated and whether zoning changes are needed. No vote was taken, and it’s unclear if or when the measure will reach an official agenda.
The definition matters here. Palmetto’s smoke shop category covers tobacco, vaping products, vaporizers, pipes, bongs and rolling papers. That’s a wide net, and it means any future rule could touch several kinds of storefronts. Staff are also examining whether future rules should set distance requirements from schools or churches, a question that often comes up when retail clusters form along busy corridors.
