A welfare check in Oberlin, Ohio, turned into a double homicide investigation Wednesday morning after police responded to a smoking vehicle in the Oberlin College Conservatory lot on East College Street. Officers traced the vehicle to its registered owner’s home, where they found two people shot dead: Pipo Nguyen-Duy, a studio art and photography professor at Oberlin College, on the first floor, and an unidentified woman on the second floor.

Daniel Jones, 31, the registered owner of the vehicle, was taken into custody around 10:20 a.m. Charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing. Authorities have not publicly explained how the vehicle fire connects to the shooting or what relationship the suspect may have to either victim.

The case has shaken the Oberlin College community, where Nguyen-Duy was a longtime member of the studio art faculty. News of a professor’s death in a small college town travels fast, and the unanswered questions about the second victim and the circumstances inside the home will shape the next few days of the investigation. What questions do you think investigators should answer first?
