The North Port Police Department this week is starting training on body cameras.

For the next month, selected officers will begin their training and evaluation.

Once that one month trial is up, police will take their reports to the City Commission to go over the cost-effectiveness of the cameras, which cost more than $200,000 per year.

Officials say only 2-3 officers per shift will be wearing them. If training goes well, commissioners are expected to approve cameras for all patrol officers.
