City commissioners in North Port are planning to write a letter to the Florida League of Cities to try and get help funding their 911 system.

Recently passed legislation regarding 911 funding has the state send money to counties rather than cities.

However, North Port’s calls initially go to the county emergency call office, then passed onto the city’s call center.

Officials are hoping that small distinction will open them up to receiving more state funds in order to upgrade dispatch software, purchase new equipment, and even increase salaries.
