North Port Development Director Resigns as Data Center Debate Turns Personal

North Port Development Services Director Alaina Ray submitted her resignation on October 15, with her final day set for November 13. City Manager Jerome Fletcher says threats and harassment drove the decision, describing social media as a “nameless mob” that goes after people in ways they should never be threatened. Ray’s resignation letter, however, cites a new job and a family relocation, and North Port Police confirm no report about the alleged threats has been filed.

Fletcher also rejected online claims connecting Ray’s prior work in Loudoun County, Virginia to the proposed data center in North Port. The project itself is on hold after commissioners approved an 18-month moratorium in September, giving the city time to review water, electricity, noise and environmental impacts. Deputy Director Lori Barnes will lead the department until a permanent replacement is found.

The episode raises real questions for Suncoast residents about how growth fights get conducted and where public pressure on city staff should stop. Do you think the moratorium is the right approach for North Port, or should the city move faster on data center rules?
