The assistant police chief of North Port has been fired after the department claims he failed to follow orders.
An investigation into Michael Pelfrey began in March, when Police Chief Kevin Vespia filed a complaint, stating that Pelfrey failed to follow his directives on two separate occasions.

The first complaint -and the only one in which he was cited for insubordination- dated to November, when Pelfrey was asked to meet with police captains involved in a then-secret internal affairs investigation involving a K9 use of force incident.

Pelfrey told Vespia he forgot…only to have it come out in March that he never met with them because “he believed the Internal Affairs investigation to be unlawful.”

Pelfrey was sacked and relieved of his duties Friday.
