An insurance program that covers nearly 2 million Floridians- including nearly everyone on the Suncoast- could be going away in less than four months. The National Flood Insurance Program, operated by FEMA, is set to expire at the end of September. Local insurance agents told WFTS-TV in Tampa that if Congress doesn’t renew it…a natural disaster could potentially shut down Florida’s economy. Most insurance companies either have never offered, or are just starting to offer flood insurance plans separate from the FEMA-run program, largely because most companies don’t have the money to cover losses without the federal government. There’s now a bipartisan group of Florida Reps and Senators pushing to get the program renewed.
