A 22-year-old DoorDash driver was shot and killed Thursday night at Birchstone Village Apartments in the Nashville area, and his 14-year-old brother, who was riding along on deliveries, is hospitalized in critical condition. Metro Nashville police say a man approached the brothers’ black Infiniti and opened fire, then two more men walked up and one of them fired as well. Santos tried to flee, backing the car into a fence, before all three suspects ran off.

The victims’ father, Juan Díaz, identified them as Jhon Diaz Santos, 22, and Alan, 14. He told reporters the brothers had made deliveries together before with no sign of trouble, saying they would go out for two or three hours and always come back safe. He learned of the shooting when a police officer knocked on the family’s door. “We don’t believe what is happening to us,” he said. “One is not prepared for such a loss or news of this size.”

The investigation remains active, with police working several leads and no suspects in custody. For families across the Suncoast and beyond who rely on gig work, the story raises practical questions about night-shift safety, sharing locations, and whether kids should ride along.
