Pools of mosquitoes in unincorporated areas of Sarasota County near Venice have tested positive for West Nile Virus.

An increase in mosquito-borne disease activity prompted a West Nile virus advisory Thursday from the Florida Department of Health.

It’s the first time this calendar year that the virus has been detected in Sarasota County, and no human cases of West Nile virus have been reported countywide at all in 2018.

County Mosquito Management Services already treated the area where the infected mosquitoes were gathered.
