A Manatee Mosquito Control District pilot was killed Thursday night when the helicopter he was flying struck an antenna or tower and crashed in a residential backyard in Myakka City. Isaac Moore, 63, was the only person aboard and was on his first mosquito-control mission of the night. A nearby resident reported hearing what sounded like a spiral descent followed by sudden silence.
Federal aviation safety investigators are documenting the crash site and examining the helicopter, including its controls, transmission, rotor system and rotor blades. They have not reached conclusions about the cause of the crash. An aviation expert noted that nighttime, low-level flying can present risks near antennas and towers, though those comments are analysis and not an official finding.
Moore’s career stretched well beyond Florida. He served more than 32 years as a Columbus, Ohio police officer and was remembered as a mentor who loved serving his community. His death has left neighbors in Myakka City and colleagues across Manatee County grieving a man who spent his life looking out for others. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
