A Venice man is being held in the Sarasota County Jail on a $25,000 bond after being charged with aggravated domestic battery causing bodily harm or disability.
Cody Bryce Leckey, 30, of the 200 block of Capri Avenue, pleaded not guilty to the charge after waiving his arraignment. The arrest followed a Sept. 7 incident when Sarasota County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic battery call.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Leckey allegedly entered a bedroom, pulled the victim off a bed, and began slapping them. Deputies observed injuries consistent with the victim’s statement, including cuts on the right knee and elbow, a “busted” lip, and a wrist injury later diagnosed as a compound radial fracture.
The victim stated that Leckey had not been taking his prescribed mental health medication and had been experiencing violent outbursts, according to the affidavit.
A witness at the scene helped the victim escape but declined to provide a formal statement. Deputies established a perimeter around the residence, with air and canine units assisting, before persuading Leckey to come out.
However, as deputies attempted to take him into custody, Leckey resisted by tensing his muscles and flailing his arms and legs, according to the affidavit. He eventually complied with commands and was arrested.
Leckey, who has no prior criminal history, later told deputies that “demons had taken over his mind” at the time of the incident.
