Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office:
The July 4th holiday is upon us, and it will surely be a busy weekend out on the water. Between the 37th annual Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix and all the July 4th festivities, there will be significantly more boat traffic on the waterways.
If you plan on heading out on the water, here are a few tips to keep in mind:
🦺 Bring enough properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets for everyone aboard.
🧯 Check safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, flares, horns, onboard radio, and throwable devices.
⚠️ Be mindful of your surroundings, obey speed signs and channel markers, and watch for swimmers or marine life such as manatees and sea turtles.
🚫 🍹 Consuming alcoholic beverages will affect perception, reaction time, and decision-making. Don’t drink and boat!
🎣 Make sure you have up-to-date fishing licenses and vessel registration. Know size requirements and what fish are in season.
