Just to our south, the Lee County school board is considering allowing guns on campus. At a briefing prior to a school board meeting, that district’s board discussed possible changes to the district’s weapons policy. The proposal would allow students 18 and older to keep guns in their cars on school property, so long as they’re concealed and “encased.” As for school employees, they would be allowed to carry weapons outside of their vehicles- including inside school buildings- under “special permission.” Principals could also allow guns during school events, but only if there is no live ammunition. Both Charlotte and Collier counties prohibit bringing guns on school property under the threat of expulsion.
