There’s a new phone scam going around Charlotte County. The sheriff’s office reports they’ve received three separate calls about a kidnapping scam. It works like this- someone receives a text or call from an 813 area code phone number. A man then gives the name of a family member and claims they have been kidnapped for various reasons. The man they claims they have holding them captive and are physically assaulting them. The caller then asks to set up a meeting and to bring money. In all cases, the alleged ‘kidnapping victim’ was located and not under duress.
