A jury will be back in court Thursday to determine if Punta Gorda Police Chief Tom Lewis was negligent in the shooting death of Mary Knowlton in August of 2016. A judge denied the request of the defense that Lewis be acquitted via ruling from the judge himself. After several witnesses testified Monday through Wednesday, Lee County Judge Devin S George decided the jury should decide the fate of Lewis. The defense argued that the officer, Lee Coel, among others failed to go through safety checks during the citizens academy when the woman was killed by Coel.
