Inmates from the Sarasota County Jail have been taking on a very stinky job.

They have been removing carcasses and bits of dead marine life killed by red tide on county beaches. More than 200 inmates hit the sand between August 2nd and 14th and picked up more than 69 tons of red tide remnants as well as trash.

Those inmates on a work release program helped to clean up Siesta Beach, Turtle Beach, South Lido, Ken Thompson Park; as well as Nokomis, Venice, Caspersen and Blind Pass beaches.

As of Sunday, the county reported 146 tons of red tide debris has been removed from beaches and boat ramps.
