Distribution Center Opening Saturday for Emergency Supplies
Charlotte County has established a distribution center offering MREs, tarps, water, and hygiene kits while supplies last. The center is located at Port Charlotte Town Center Mall, 1441 Tamiami Trail, in the Macy’s parking lot. Sand Drop-off Site Open at Englewood Beach
A sand drop-off site is now operational at the north end of Englewood Beach’s parking area at Chadwick Park, 2100 N. Beach Road. Open daily from dawn to dusk, the site accepts flood-deposited sand from homes and properties for free. The sand will be screened and cleaned for future storm recovery projects, but homeowners and contractors are advised not to place sand back on the beach as it could result in a fine. No empty or full sandbags should be left at the site.
Safety Warning for Lithium Batteries and Electric Vehicles
Charlotte County officials are advising residents to avoid keeping lithium batteries exposed to floodwater in homes, garages, or sheds. These batteries, found in electric vehicles, e-bikes, scooters, and more, may overheat and cause fires or explosions if damaged by water. Charlotte County Fire & EMS has responded to multiple fire incidents due to flooded batteries. Residents should also have electric vehicle chargers inspected by a licensed electrician before use.
Business Damage Assessment Survey Available
Businesses affected by Hurricane Helene can complete a business damage assessment survey at FloridaDisaster.biz. This survey helps determine eligibility for assistance from federal, state, or local agencies. It also provides access to information about disaster loans and recovery resources.
Assistance for Hurricane Helene Cleanup
Crisis Cleanup is offering help with storm cleanup, including mucking out homes, removing debris, and applying tarps. The hotline, open through October 11, connects residents with volunteers from local organizations. While services are free, assistance is not guaranteed due to high demand.
FPL Customer Assistance Team Offering Support
The Florida Power & Light Customer Assistance Team will be at the Mid-County Regional Library parking lot, 2050 Forrest Nelson Blvd., Port Charlotte, on Saturday, Sept. 28. From 8:30 a.m. until dusk, the team will provide outage updates, drinking water, and phone charging stations.
Charlotte County Hiring Temporary Storm Cleanup Workers
Charlotte County is hiring temporary workers for storm cleanup and related duties. These positions start immediately at $25 per hour, with no experience required. A walk-in hiring event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 18500 Murdock Circle, Suite A-130, Port Charlotte.
