Scientists at Mote Marine Laboratory say Hurricane Irma caused huge problems not just for people, but for sea turtles. In all, they say at least 153 nests were washed out as a result of the storm. As for the number of damaged nests? That number could be 2, 3, even 4 times as many. The nests that were disturbed or damaged along beaches from Longboat Key south to Venice. Biologists are now out protecting the nests that survived. They are urging beachgoers to leave alone any nests they may come across.
