Helene Update Venice Florida 7:00 AM 9/26/24

7:30AM SEPT 26: The City of Venice continues to monitor Hurricane Helene. Sarasota County is currently under a Tornado Watch until 8 p.m., as well as a Tropical Storm Warning, Storm Surge Warning, Flood Watch, and Hurricane Watch.

EVACUATIONS & EVACUATION CENTERS:
Expected impacts from Helene may cause damaging winds and flooding. Mandatory evacuations have been called for residents in Level A, manufactured homes, mobile homes and boats, and in areas near Hatchett and Curry creeks. Sarasota County Emergency Management Chief Sandra Tapfumaney is urging residents in these areas to evacuate NOW.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management has partnered with Uber to provide Floridians free rides to shelters in counties under a state of emergency for Hurricane Helene. (Up to $35 each way, to and from a state-approved shelter.) To get a ride to a shelter: Open the Uber app, tap Account on the bottom right and tap wallet, add promo code HELENERELIEF

STREET FLOODING
* Tarpon Center Drive from The Esplanade North to Humphris Park

FACILITY & SERVICE CLOSURES:
* City Hall and other City facilities are closed today, Thursday, Sept. 26, to prepare for the storm’s impact.
* No trash, recyclables or yard waste pickups for City of Venice customers. The Sarasota County Landfill is closed.
Residents with regularly scheduled collection on Thursday or Friday should not put materials at the curb until further notice. Conditions will be assessed after the storm passes to determine when operations will resume.
* Humphris Park at the South Jetty remains closed, until conditions improve as determined by the City.

City of Venice sandbag operations have ended.

 

VENICE AIRPORT:
FPL is staging operations at the Airport Festival Grounds. Motorists should expect heavy truck traffic in the area.
