The Sarasota County School District officially has a Chief of Police, as Paul Grohowski was sworn in on Tuesday.

He is the first member of the newly formed department to be sworn in. The new department will be working in tandem with local city and county law enforcement as well as EMS and other first responders as part of a sweeping school safety plan.

Grohowski called his position “a symbol of progress” for safety in the district. His position -and the department as a whole- was created out of a school safety bill passed by the Legislature earlier this year.
