ICYMI: Governor DeSantis Announces Record 126-Day Gulf Red Snapper Season for 2025

DESTIN, Fla. — Governor Ron DeSantis has announced a record-breaking 126-day Gulf Red Snapper recreational season for 2025—the longest season since Florida took over management of the fishery. This expanded season builds on the momentum from 2024, providing anglers even more opportunities to fish during key holidays such as Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

“Florida is the fishing capital of the world, home to 4 million licensed anglers and generations of families who cherish our waters,” said Governor DeSantis. “Thanks to smart state management, we’re once again setting a record with the longest Gulf Red Snapper season in state history.”

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Chairman Rodney Barreto added, “We appreciate Governor DeSantis’ continued commitment to making Florida the Fishing and Boating Capital of the World. These added weekend and holiday opportunities mean more time for families to fish and make lifelong memories.”

FWC Executive Director Roger Young emphasized the role of sound science: “This extended season reflects the robust data from the State Reef Fish Survey, made possible by strong support from the Governor, Legislature, and our anglers.”

The 2025 season applies to private recreational vessels and federally permitted charter vessels. The summer season runs from May 24–26 and then daily from June 1 through July 31. The fall season includes:

  • September: 1–14, 19–21, 26–28

  • October: 3–5, 10–12, 17–19, 24–26, 31–Nov 2

  • November: 7–9, 11 (Veterans Day), 14–16, 21–23, 27–30 (Thanksgiving weekend)

  • December: 5–7, 12–14, 19–21, 25–28 (Christmas weekend)

This extended season is supported by the State Reef Fish Survey (SRFS) and may be adjusted to add days if weather forces closures. All anglers fishing for red snapper from private recreational vessels must be registered as State Reef Fish Anglers, regardless of license exemptions. Registration is available at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com.
