The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office is warning you to be careful when using pumps at area gas stations. There have been reports of credit cards skimmers appearing in those pumps. Skimmers are placed into the housing of the gas pumps and are used to gather personal information of credit cards. That information is then used to either fraudulently steal the victim’s identity or use the victim’s credit card. The Sheriff’s Office suggests that prior to using the fuel pumps, you visually inspect the pump housing for signs of tampering such as the breaching of security tape or seeing unusual objects that may appear in or around the credit card reader.
