From Plastic Bricks to Second Chances: How a Lego Wheelchair Gave a Rescue Kitten New Hope

Rex, a four-month-old rescue kitten, was born with cerebellar hypoplasia—a neurological condition commonly called wobbly-cat syndrome. For the first months of his life, he couldn’t walk. His muscles didn’t have the coordination to move the way a normal kitten could. Rescue volunteers from Miles To Go and Rescue Connect took him in and started working on his rehabilitation, but they quickly realized they needed a mobility device to help him exercise and build strength. The problem: traditional pet wheelchairs cost around eighteen hundred dollars, and Rex would outgrow it in just six weeks. That’s when Michael Hawley, an employee at Bricks & Minifigs in Wilmington, North Carolina, came up with an unconventional solution.

Hawley’s been building with Legos since childhood. His creativity and problem-solving instincts started young—he used to build intricate contraptions just to defend himself against his older sisters. When rescue volunteers approached him about Rex’s situation, he realized he could design a functional wheelchair entirely from interlocking plastic bricks. After some careful adjustments, the prototype worked. Rex could finally move independently. What made this moment even more meaningful was Hawley’s personal connection to the cause: he’d owned a dog with the same condition years ago, and that experience left a lasting impact on him.

Today, Rex is in rehab, getting stronger every day, and those rescue volunteers say they’ve never seen anything like it. Watching that little kitten move around on his own gave them genuine hope for his future.
