A Halloween night in Duncan, Oklahoma, ended with a former judge in jail. Police say Jerry Herberger, 73, a former Stephens County judge, fired a gun in the direction of trick-or-treaters on October 31. When officers responded at 8:02 p.m., Herberger pointed his firearm at one of them before complying with demands and leaving the home. He was arrested and booked into the Stephens County Jail.
Herberger faces charges including assault and battery with a deadly weapon, attempted murder, and possession of a firearm while intoxicated. No injuries were reported, which is the best news in an otherwise troubling story.
For Suncoast listeners, the case raises a familiar question: does the justice system treat its own differently? A man who once handed down sentences is now on the other side of the courtroom, and how this case is handled will say a lot about accountability.
