An analysis by the Herald-Tribune of Florida’s criminal justice system indicates that black defendants spend more time locked up than white defendants for the same types of crimes. The paper says judges in nearly half the counties in Florida sentence blacks convicted of felony drug possession to more than double the prison time as whites. That’s even when they have similar backgrounds. The Herald-Tribune says a lack of diversity among judges is partly to blame. But the paper says judges it contacted denied discrimination, and some blamed police officers and prosecutors.
