The Suncoast is in for a classic summer weekend — and by classic, we mean hot, humid, and stormy. A First Alert is in effect through Sunday as rain chances hover around 70% across Sarasota and Bradenton. Expect heavy downpours near the coast in the mornings, with thunderstorms firing up inland during the afternoon. The National Hurricane Center says no tropical systems are brewing in the Atlantic, so this is just our typical July pattern. But that doesn’t mean we can ignore it.
The heat is the big story. Highs will hit near 90, but with the humidity, it’s going to feel like 100 to 105 degrees. That’s dangerous if you’re not careful. The Weather Prediction Center is also warning about potential excessive rain and minor flooding in low-lying areas and poor drainage spots around town. Give yourself extra time on the roads and watch for ponding water.
Beachgoers need to pay attention to the rip current risk, which is high through Friday evening along the Manatee and Sarasota coastlines. WWSB meteorologists say to stay near a lifeguard and remember: if you get caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore, not against it. Boaters should expect choppy bay waters with seas around three to four feet. So whether you’re hitting the sand, the water, or just running errands, take it slow and stay safe out there.
