The officer who accidentally killed a bystander during a public event has decided to sue the City of Punta Gorda to receive his pension. Lee Coel was denied by a police officers’ pension board unanimously in July to collect disability benefits. He was fired in March after manslaughter charges were filed against him. The trial in the death of Mary Knowlton is expected to start at some point in 2018.
