Federal disaster recovery money is on its way back to the Suncoast. Through FEMA’s Public Assistance Program, North Port will receive more than $600,000 to reimburse law enforcement costs tied to Hurricane Ian, while Sarasota is set to get over $750,000 for the Indian Beach Park restoration project.
The biggest share goes to Manatee County: nearly $44 million to remove more than 1.2 million cubic yards of debris left behind by Hurricanes Milton and Debbie. For context, that’s debris residents have been living with for months, piled along roadsides and in neighborhoods long after the storms passed.
Before any of these funds reach local governments, the Florida Division of Emergency Management must sign off. That step matters, because it determines when cities and counties can actually put the money to work. Local business owners are still feeling the storm’s effects. Daniel Sullivan, manager at Beach House Waterfront Restaurant, described the aftermath as post-apocalyptic and said recovery can feel overwhelming at times.
