Ernie Johnson announced Wednesday that this season will be his final one as host of “Inside the NBA.” The 70-year-old has led the show since 1990, after joining Turner Sports in 1989, and became one of the most recognizable studio hosts in sports television. His message was brief: “It’s just time.”
Johnson made clear he is not retiring. He’ll continue covering the NCAA men’s tournament for CBS and Turner Sports, and he acknowledged recent heart issues while saying they are not the reason for his decision. He simply wants to slow down, describing the move as “a turning of the page.” During his run, Johnson won six Sports Emmys and earned a spot in the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame.
For Suncoast viewers, Johnson has been part of the basketball soundtrack for decades, from spring training evenings in Sarasota to long summer playoff runs at home. His exit marks the end of an era, but not the end of his career. What’s your favorite Ernie Johnson moment on “Inside the NBA”? Let us know in the comments.
