
Englewood Pioneer Days to Return This Labor Day Weekend with Exciting Events and WENG will be BROADCASTING THE PARADE LIVE!

Englewood’s annual Pioneer Days celebration is set to return this Labor Day Weekend, offering a host of family-friendly activities that honor the town’s rich heritage. The tradition kicks off on Saturday, August 31st, with the highly anticipated Cardboard Boat Races, followed by a range of events throughout the weekend, culminating in the Pioneer Day Parade on Monday, September 2nd.
Cardboard Boat Races
The festivities begin on Saturday, August 31st, at Indian Mound Park with the Cardboard Boat Races, starting at 10:00 a.m. Spectators can enjoy the creative and often humorous boat designs as they navigate the course. Food trucks, including Shaz Shack Italian Ice & Gelato and Lunchbox Food Truck, will be on-site to keep everyone fueled throughout the event.
For those interested in participating, a Cardboard Boat Making Class will be held on Saturday, August 24th, and Sunday, August 25th, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Indian Mound Park. All materials will be provided, and participants can store their boats at the Sailing Center until race day.
The Cardboard Boat Race is organized by the Englewood Sailing Association, Lasbury Tracy Realty, and St. David’s Jubilee Center.
Pioneer Day Parade
On Monday, September 2nd, the Pioneer Day Parade, with a nostalgic 1950s theme, will begin at 9:00 a.m. Staging will take place at 240 S Indiana Avenue, with participants encouraged to arrive early. The parade route runs from Obee’s Parking Lot down W Cowels Street, to McCall Road, and finishes at the Veterans Memorial Pavilion.
The parade is organized by a coalition of local Rotary Clubs and Paradise Exclusive Real Estate-Hesse Team, ensuring a lively and engaging event for all attendees.
After Parade Festivities
Following the parade, the celebrations continue at Pioneer Park, starting at approximately 10:00 a.m. The day will feature a series of activities, including the announcement of parade winners at 10:20 a.m., a Diaper Derby at 10:30 a.m., and live music by Johnny and the Hubcaps, who will perform 1950s hits throughout the day.
Additional activities include a Pie Eating Contest at 11:30 a.m., a Watermelon Eating Contest at 12:30 p.m., and a variety of children’s games and activities at Pioneer Plaza from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Vendors and Local Engagement
Pioneer Plaza will host vendors from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., offering children’s games and crafts, and featuring local organizations such as GFWC Rotonda Woman’s Club, Englewood Creative Arts, Grace Community Church, and more. Vendor spots are still available for those interested in participating.
Grand Marshals and Mayor Candidates
This year’s Grand Marshals are Esther Horton and the GFWC Rotonda West Woman’s Club, recognized for their contributions to the community.
The Pioneer Days Mayor race will see candidates Ronnie Jackson, Laura Roy, English Jan, and Iris Beaugrand competing to raise funds and awareness for their respective charities. The Mayor will be honored with a sash, ride in the parade, and participate in the Pioneer Day events. The committee, led by Jeannie Joyce, aims to highlight the importance of local charities and the positive impact of community involvement.
