Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County will post signage at the following beaches to advise the public that red tide is present after Monday’s beach water samples at these beaches had elevated counts of red tide.
The beaches affected are:
✔️Turtle Beach
✔️Nokomis Beach
✔️North Jetty
✔️Venice Beach
✔️Service Club Park
✔️Venice Fishing Pier
✔️Brohard Beach
✔️Caspersen Beach
Staff continues to monitor and evaluate each beach daily for the effects of red tide.
Red tides, also called harmful algal blooms (HABs), occur when microscopic algae multiply to higher-than-normal concentrations, often discoloring the water. Although more than 50 HAB species occur in the Gulf of Mexico, one of the most well-known species is Karenia brevis, the red tide organism.
