Florida Launches ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ for Labor Day Weekend”

This Labor Day weekend, Florida law enforcement is stepping up efforts to keep roads safe with the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. Running through Labor Day, September 4, 2024, this initiative aims to stop drunk driving and reduce traffic accidents.

More Police on the Roads

Drivers in Florida will notice more police officers on highways and local roads. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and local police will set up sobriety checkpoints and increase patrols to catch anyone driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“Drunk driving is a leading cause of deadly crashes in Florida. We’re here to prevent that,” said FHP Director Gene Spaulding. “If you’re drinking this weekend, don’t drive. It’s that simple.”

Why This Matters

Labor Day weekend is known for a higher number of DUI-related crashes. Last year, over 450 crashes in Florida involved drunk drivers during this weekend, leading to 37 deaths. The goal this year is to reduce these numbers.

Spreading the Word

The campaign also includes ads on social media, billboards, and radio, reminding everyone about the dangers of drunk driving. Floridians are encouraged to use rideshare services, taxis, or have a designated driver if they plan to drink.

There’s also the SaferRide app, which helps you call a taxi or friend for a safe ride home.

Serious Consequences

Driving under the influence in Florida can result in heavy fines, license suspension, vehicle impoundment, and even jail time. A DUI conviction can lead to higher insurance rates and a permanent criminal record.

“Driving drunk isn’t worth the risk,” said Spaulding. “The consequences can last a lifetime for both the driver and others on the road.”

Stay Safe This Weekend

As the holiday weekend approaches, Florida law enforcement is urging everyone to make safe choices. Whether you’re attending a barbecue, heading to the beach, or visiting friends, remember: Drive sober or get pulled over.

Let’s work together to make this Labor Day weekend safe for everyone.
