New Year’s weekend is not only the biggest party holiday of the year, it’s also the holiday with the most drunken driving arrests. That’s why the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is taking part in the national campaign “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.” It began last week and continues through New Year’s Day. Law enforcement will be focused on drunk drivers, distracted drivers and drivers committing other traffic violations. You’re advised to consider options for a safe ride home, such as hiring Uber or Lyft or a cab company or having a designated driver. Better yet, celebrate at home so that no driving is needed. Last December, alcohol was a factor in more than 800 traffic deaths across the country.
