Would you pay $40,000 per month to serve in the Florida House of Representatives for nine months? Well, as a taxpayer in Sarasota County, that’s what election officials estimate people will be on the hook for in an upcoming special election. Sarasota County Elections Supervisor Ron Turner told ABC-7 the Florida House District 72 special election will cost taxpayers $350,000, with the winner only serving out the rest of the year. Three candidates are vying to replace Republican Alexandra Miller, who resigned from her first two-year term after only a few months in office last August. Republican James Buchanan, Libertarian Alison Foxall and Democrat Margaret Good are on the ballot. Early voting begins Saturday, the election is February 13.
