Homeowners across the Suncoast have a January 1 deadline to watch. Governor Ron DeSantis told reporters at the Florida Capitol that a special session on property taxes will be held, but the Legislature will set the dates. The homestead amendment voters approved must be implemented by the new year and applies to every taxing authority except school districts. DeSantis said the session will also limit local governments from finding other ways to tax and create a grant pool of tens of millions of dollars for core local needs, including rural sheriff’s departments.
On the national picture, the governor was blunt. He called the midterms the political worst-case scenario for Republicans, predicting Democrats could hold 56 Senate seats and as many as 258 House seats. Florida’s 20-member GOP congressional delegation held all its seats, even as the party lost key races in Texas, and DeSantis noted record Democratic turnout in Florida at 68% of registered voters. He also criticized the Florida House’s conduct over the past two years as not acceptable and declined to discuss his own future plans.
For local listeners, the practical question is what the property tax changes mean for household budgets and for city and county services, especially in beach communities where insurance costs are already squeezing homeowners. The January session will be the one to follow. What do you want to see come out of the special session? Let us know on our social pages.
