Debate Continues Over Manasota Beach Road Extension in Sarasota County
SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. – Sarasota County held a public hearing this week on the future of the Manasota Beach Road extension, a project that has drawn both strong support and sharp criticism from residents in the wake of repeated hurricane damage.
The Plan
The $17 million extension would connect Wellen Park directly to Manasota Beach, cutting travel time in half and giving residents the option to reach the beach by car, bike, golf cart, or even on foot. County officials say the project is expected to be completed by fall 2026. Supporters believe the extension will improve convenience, boost property values, and strengthen the community’s connection to the coast.
Concerns Raised
At the hearing, many residents voiced concerns about the project’s resilience. Following Hurricanes Idalia, Helen, and Milton, the road has repeatedly been submerged, washed out, or closed—forcing long detours for locals and emergency responders. Critics say continuing to rebuild the same way will waste taxpayer money. Instead, they’ve urged county leaders to “do the right thing” by investing in more permanent fixes, such as hardening the roadway or constructing a bridge.
County’s Response
Officials acknowledge the road serves as a “lifeline for locals and visitors,” but they’ve also noted restrictions on how emergency repair funds can be spent. In many cases, regulations only allow the county to replace what was previously in place, limiting options for long-term improvements.
As the debate continues, the question remains whether Sarasota County will move forward with the current extension plan—or explore more durable solutions to withstand future storms.
